Description
This item is a Lucky Bell of San Michele, a traditional souvenir charm from the island of Capri, Italy. Based on web consensus and design characteristics, this piece is a World War II era talisman, a type frequently acquired and worn for good luck by United States Army Air Forces personnel stationed in Italy during the conflict. The charm is constructed from 800 fineness silver and consists of a functional miniature bell with an internal clapper. The bell is suspended from a short chain composed of three oval links, which is attached to a T-bar toggle clasp intended for use as a pendant, watch fob, or bracelet charm. The body of the bell features incised inscriptions. One side reads THE LUCKY LITTLE BELL OF SAN MICHELE. The reverse side features a four-leaf clover symbol containing the word CAPRI. To the left of the clover is the silver fineness mark 800, and to the right is the word BREVET, indicating a patented design. A decorative geometric border is incised around the bottom rim of the bell.
