Lot 105:
Description
This vintage silver gelatin print captures the historical scene at Piazzale Loreto in Milan following the execution of Benito Mussolini and his associates in May 1945. The photograph depicts the bodies of Mussolini, Clara Petacci, and other fascist officials suspended by their feet from a metal girder structure, shown here in an inverted orientation. The reverse of the unmounted print features a detailed handwritten inscription in ink: Thought this would be a novelty, but it seems to be out now, so it will probably be in ‘Life’ one of these weeks. The Duce himself – second from left, and his girlfriend. Taken in Milan May 1945. The image provides a primary source record of the public display of the deceased figures against an urban backdrop.
