Spring Military Aviation and Militaria Auction
Lot 257:
Description
This lot presents a highly collectible and desirable example of a German Model 1940 (M40) Single Decal (SD) Waffen-SS Combat Helmet. The M40 model is identifiable by its rolled edge and the ventilation hole being crimped directly into the shell, distinguishing it from the earlier M35. This helmet features the single SS decal on the wearer’s right side, indicative of the simplified decal regulations introduced in 1940.The helmet was manufactured by Quist (Q) in the desirable large size 64, clearly stamped "Q64" on the interior skirt. The lot number, stamped beneath the size mark, appears to be "N515". The shell retains its original dark field gray-green finish, displaying a smooth texture with authentic, light surface wear and patina consistent with age and use, but not heavy combat damage. The key feature is the Waffen-SS Runes Shield Decal, positioned on the wearer’s right side. This decal displays the twin black Sig runes on a white/silver shield background. It is an authentic, period-applied decal, showing minor age and wear, estimated to be approximately 90%+ intact. The clear visibility of the decal on the M40 shell is highly valued. The interior is complete with its original components. The liner system features a zinc-plated steel liner band and the original perforated brown leather liner. The leather shows heavy drying, darkening, and minor cracking typical of an antique combat helmet, including a partial tear in one of the rear tongues, but it remains largely intact. The chinstrap bails (attachment loops) are present, but the original chinstrap is not included. This M40 Single Decal SS helmet, manufactured by Quist in a sought-after large size, represents a significant piece of World War II history and is an excellent, untouched example for the serious collector.
