Description

This comprehensive collection of United States Navy officer attire and insignia belonged to Captain Carlyle Leland Helber, a graduate of the US Naval Academy Class of 1923. The grouping includes two black wool evening dress tailcoats. One jacket is fitted with six gold-tone USN eagle-and-anchor buttons, while the other features satin-faced lapels and six black cloth-covered buttons. Headgear consists of a senior officer visor cap manufactured by Art Caps of New York, featuring gold bullion oak leaf embroidery on the visor, a gold lace chin strap, and a metal USN officer cap device. Accompanying the visor cap are two tan cotton replacement covers. Also included is an olive drab garrison cap with a single gold-toned oak leaf rank insignia. The insignia and accessories portion of the lot contains several items including two pairs of Commander rank shoulder boards featuring three gold lace stripes and bullion line officer stars, one set of gold-toned bullion Naval Aviator wings, two additional USN officer cap devices in bullion and metal, and one gold-colored dress aiguillette. A cardboard shipping box from the Horstmann Uniform Company is included, addressed to Helber during his tenure as a Lieutenant Commander at the Naval Aircraft Factory in Philadelphia. The visor cap contains a printed identification card for Captain Carlyle Leland Helber.
