Lot 326:
Description
Complete RAF Pilots Grouping. A complete WWII RAF pilot’s ensemble comprising a Battle Dress jacket, trousers, and cream wool sweater. The Battle Dress jacket is dated 1941—the first year of production—with size markings now faded after more than 80 years. It features a well-preserved flat pilot’s wing and RAF brass buttons securing the shoulder epaulettes. Inside the jacket, an RAAF pilot has signed the interior pocket—first name David, with the surname difficult to decipher—noting awards including the DFC and bar, and likely a DFM. He served with No. 35 Squadron Pathfinders. The signature is hidden from view when the jacket is displayed. The Battle Dress trousers are labeled Suits Aircrew, Air Service Dress Trousers, size 00, intended for a height of 5 ft 0 in to 5 ft 1 in with a 31-inch waist. Though small, they pair well with the jacket and cream roll-neck sweater, making for an excellent display on a smaller mannequin. The cream wool pullover sweater complements the set and evokes the classic look seen in wartime films and documentaries. Also included is a Royal Air Force 1941 pattern Mae West life vest, size medium, complete with original kapok flotation pads, an original inflation bladder with hose, and a white bakelite whistle. The vest is further distinguished by a hand-painted Donald Duck character on the front. The set is accompanied by a WWII RAF officer’s peaked cap, made by Walters and Co. Ltd., The Curl, Oxford. It remains in very good condition, free from moth damage on the crown and brim, with only minor nips to the underside that are not visible when displayed. Additionally, a WWII RAF officer’s side cap is included, stamped internally with size 6 7/8, along with the Broad Arrow and War Department markings.
