Lot 332:
Description
This is a World War II era United States Army Air Forces USAAF Type A-2 leather flight jacket produced under government contract by the Poughkeepsie Leather Coat Co. Inc. The jacket is constructed of brown leather, likely horsehide or goatskin, featuring a cotton interior lining, two front patch pockets with snap-down flaps, a shirt-style collar with snap fasteners, and wool knit cuffs and waistband. The right breast features a multi-color embroidered patch for the Air Transport Command ATC, depicting a stylized red and blue aircraft silhouette over a blue grid globe on a tan background with a red, white, and blue striped border section. A woven black and gold manufacturer label is securely stitched into the interior neck and reads: TYPE A-2 / DRAWING No. 30-1415 / A.C. CONTRACT No. W535ac28560 / POUGHKEEPSIE LEATHER COAT CO. INC. / POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. / PROPERTY / AIR FORCE U.S. ARMY. The contract number W535ac28560 dates the production of this garment to approximately 1942. The main closure features a brass Talon brand zipper with the name marked on both the tab and slider body. Visible hand-stitching on the interior lining corresponds to the placement of the ATC patch, indicating period application.
