Description
A World War II era US Army Air Forces Type A-2 leather flight jacket manufactured by Star Sportswear Mfg. Co. of Lynn, Massachusetts. The jacket is constructed from dark brown leather and features a point collar with snap-down fasteners, two front patch pockets with button-down flaps, and a metal front zipper. The interior neck contains a black label with the following text: TYPE A-2, DWG. NO. 30-1415, ORDER NO. 33-038 AC-22557, STAR SPORTSWEAR MFG. CO., LYNN, MASS., PROPERTY AIR FORCE, U.S. ARMY. The left shoulder displays a faded USAAF winged star transfer decal with the text ARMY AIR FORCES partially visible below. The right chest features a shield-shaped embroidered patch for the 355th Fighter Group, depicting a mailed fist holding a torch and a sword with a scroll. The left chest bears a circular embroidered unit patch for the 6147th Tactical Control Group, known as the Mosquitoes, depicting a personified mosquito character in flight with aircraft silhouettes and the text MOSQUITO at the base. This specific combination of insignia indicates service during the Korean War on a World War II production garment.
