Description
After Elk Eber (German, 1892-1941), Die letzte Handgranate (The Last Hand Grenade). This oil on canvas painting depicts a three-quarter portrait of a German soldier in a realistic style. The figure is shown wearing a Stahlhelm and a field-gray tunic while preparing a Stielhandgranate (stick grenade). The wooden stock of a bolt-action rifle is visible in the lower right foreground. The background consists of atmospheric, billowing smoke and sky, executed with visible brushwork that contrasts with the more detailed rendering of the soldier’s facial features. The work is housed in a simple, dark-stained wood frame with a prominent grain. No signature, initials, or date are visible on the front of the canvas. 24X20
