Description

Large-format Imperial Japanese 8-ray Rising Sun flag, known as the Kyokujitsu-ki, dating from the World War II period. The flag is of high-quality multi-piece construction, where the central red sun and sixteen radiating sunbeams are individually cut and joined to the white field using double-needle stitching. The primary material is a sturdy, medium-weight natural fiber, appearing to be a cotton or linen blend. The hoist edge is reinforced with a heavy white canvas sleeve and includes a thick corded rope loop at the corner for mounting. A notable construction detail is the presence of sunburst reinforcement stitching at the corners, a feature characteristic of flags manufactured for durability in naval or field-grade environments. While the centered sun design was the standard for the Imperial Japanese Army war flag, the specific canvas reinforcement and rope hardware are frequently associated with Imperial Japanese Navy rank flags, such as those for an Admiral or Vice Admiral. No manufacturer marks, kanji characters, or signatures are present on the fabric or hoist. MEASUREMENTS 96X147
