Description
This Victorian-period wall-mounted match holder is constructed of cast iron. The front panel features a relief casting depicting a sporting dog, possibly a pointer or setter, set within a landscape of tall grass and bordered by a beaded frame. The piece includes a hinged front compartment for holding matches. The top is finished with a decorative scrolled crest featuring two circular holes for wall mounting. The bottom of the receptacle is detailed with a gadrooned or petal-like design. On the lower front edge is the raised text: PAT D JAN 21 1862.
