Description
A sterling silver vesta case or matchsafe manufactured by Unger Brothers of Newark, New Jersey. The rectangular case features elaborate high-relief repouss? scrollwork and acanthus leaf motifs characteristic of the Art Nouveau period. The front panel includes a central smooth cartouche with hand-engraved cursive script reading L. B. W. above the text Souvenir of N.Y. The reverse features a corresponding repouss? design with a plain central field. The interior of the lid and base retain portions of an original gold-washed vermeil finish. The inner rim of the lid is stamped with the circular maker mark for Unger Brothers and the word STERLING.
