Description
A group of four antique vesta cases, or match safes, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. The collection includes a silver-toned oval vesta case with a hinged lid and a striker on the bottom. This piece is inscribed on the side with several patent dates: PAT’D OCT. 15. 1872, JAN. 7. FEB. 4. 1874, MAR. 31. 1874, and CANADA OCT. 13. 1873, along with the name G. W. PARKER. A second item is a rectangular silver-plated souvenir vesta case featuring a raised relief depiction of the United States Capitol Building within ornate scrolling borders. The reverse is inscribed SOUVENIR OF WASHINGTON D.C. in a stylized script. A third vesta case is constructed of brass with a worn gold-toned finish, serving as a promotional item for the New-Yorker Staats-Zeitung. The front is engraved with the text: Compliments of the Staats Zeitung EXCHANGE F. Russina. The final item is a rectangular carved wooden box with rounded ends and a sliding lid. The top is decorated with a hand-carved relief of an Edelweiss flower and leaves, while the reverse features an inset oval textured striker area.
