Description
An antique sterling silver match safe, also known as a vesta case, manufactured by the Gorham Manufacturing Company. The case features a rectangular form with rounded edges, decorated with elaborate all-over repousse and chased floral and foliate scrollwork in the Rococo Revival style. Both the front and back of the case include a central unengraved shield-shaped cartouche. The item is designed with a side-hinged flip-top lid. Stamped on the interior rim is a circled letter G hallmark followed by the word STERLING. An internal striker bar is located along the interior rim for igniting matches.
