Description

This is a rare and highly sought-after example of the First Pattern Cap Badge worn by a Subordinate Officer or Chief Section Leader of the Women s Royal Air Force WRAF , dating to the service s original existence 1918-1920 . The badge is meticulously hand-embroidered using thick, high-quality gold-coloured silk or cotton thread onto a dark wool or felt backing, characteristic of the WRAF s early cloth insignia. The design features the distinctive figure-eight composition of the era: a detailed King s Crown surmounting the iconic RAF eagle/albatross motif contained within a gold rope border. This piece displays commensurate signs of age and service wear, including thread tarnishing and minor fraying, confirming its originality from the pivotal period of the WRAF s formation alongside the Royal Air Force. An excellent and scarce artifact of women s service in early British military aviation.
