December 7th Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 106:
Description
This is a classic example of a United States Purple Heart Medal presented in its original, fitted presentation case, dating from the World War II era. The exterior of the case is black leatherette with gold tooling and is clearly marked PURPLE HEART on the lid. The interior features a yellow velvet or satin lining, perfectly contoured to secure the medal, its ribbon bar, and the miniature lapel pin. The medal itself is a gold-rimmed heart of purple enamel, featuring a bust of George Washington in the center and his coat of arms above, suspended from a purple and white-bordered ribbon. The reverse of the medal features the inscription FOR MILITARY MERIT, with a space for engraving the recipient s name, though the medal face shown here appears unengraved. As the oldest military decoration currently awarded, the Purple Heart recognizes those wounded or killed while serving with the U.S. Armed Forces. The completeness of this set, including the original presentation box, the ribbon bar, and the miniature lapel pin, makes this a desirable, untouched collectible from the period of the war.
