Description
German WWII M40 Single Decal Army Heer Helmet with Heavy Camouflage and Chinstrap
This lot offers a superb and highly evocative example of a German Model 1940 M40 Single Decal SD Combat Helmet issued to the Heer German Army, presenting an outstanding combat-worn patina. The M40 model is recognized by its rolled edge and the simplification of the ventilation hole crimped directly into the shell.
The helmet shell was manufactured by Vereinigte Deutsche Nickelwerke AG, Schwerte NS in a large size 64, as is partially visible and consistent with the shell shape and size. The lot number, stamped into the rear interior, appears to be 790. The exterior displays a dramatic, heavily worn field-applied camouflage scheme. The original factory field gray finish has been over-painted with a rough application of earth tones, resulting in significant chipping, scuffing, and widespread surface rust and heavy patina that creates a mottled, veteran appearance. This aesthetic strongly suggests heavy use in a forward combat zone.
The helmet is a Single Decal configuration, and the Wehrmacht Heer Eagle Decal is clearly visible on the wearer s left side. The decal is generally intact, estimated to be approximately 90% complete, displaying the clear Wehrmacht eagle on a black shield, despite the rugged condition of the surrounding paint.
The interior is complete with its original components. It retains the correct steel liner band and the perforated brown leather liner. The leather shows heavy drying, darkening, and patina consistent with years of use, but is largely intact and secured by its original drawstring. Crucially, the helmet retains its original brown leather chinstrap which is affixed to the liner band and complete with its period aluminum buckle. The chinstrap shows appropriate wear and age.
This M40 Single Decal Army helmet is a premium historical artifact, valued for its desirable M40 model, large shell size, and its powerful, untouched, heavy camouflage finish with the clearly visible single decal and original chinstrap, making it an excellent display piece.
