December 7th Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 186:
Description
This lot features an extraordinary and highly historically significant grouping of two US WWII M1 Helmet Shells and an inner liner, one designated for a high-ranking General Officer. This grouping is a premium offering for the advanced collector of WWII US Army headgear.
The core of the grouping is an M1 Helmet Steel Shell finished in olive drab paint with a textured surface. The helmet shell is a highly desirable early-war piece, identified by the visible heat stamp of 103A, which definitively dates its production to 1942. Affixed to the front of the shell are three silver-tone stars, the insignia for a Lieutenant General. This helmet retains its original canvas chinstrap with steel hardware, typical of the WWII era.
The grouping also includes an internal Hawley Liner the first type of M1 helmet liner made of fibrous material and a separate, heavily-used M1 Helmet Liner Cover constructed of khaki cotton twill. Both the helmet shell s front and the liner cover bear clear, stenciled identification marks in the format O-271855 J.H. DOOLITTLE GEN. US A. This stenciling, utilizing the corrected service number O-271855 associated with General James H. Doolittle leader of the 1942 Tokyo Raid , presents a compelling potential link to one of the most famous figures of WWII aviation. The liner cover itself is heavily distressed with tears and damage consistent with hard field use.
Important Note on Provenance: While the helmet is a confirmed early-war M1 shell 1942 with genuine Lieutenant General rank insignia and bears the stenciled name and serial number associated with General Doolittle, full authentication of this connection is not possible through visual inspection alone and would require specialized historical research. The item is offered based on its clear markings and historical configuration.
