Holiday Auction Militaria and Hollywood !
Lot 235:
Description
This original piece is inscribed "Feb 19th 1945 Iwo Jima". This is the exact style flag that was first raised at Iwo Jima before it was taken down and replaced with a much larger flag this is depicted in the famous Iwo Jima Flag raising. The first flag was given to General Harry Liversedge. That flag stayed with the General and hung proudly in his home till his death in 1951. He lived in Pine Grove Ca. The location of the first flag since then is not known. But this flag being auctioned here was found at a flea market in southern California and bought from a storage locker buyer. This flag shows signs of wear and wind damage consistent with being on a navy ship prior to invasion. Is this the real first flag??? Who knows, but the story this flag could tell is amazing. Flag has beautiful hand painted stars. Roughly 46" at its longest point on flag and 30" wide.
