Description

This is a rare and highly sought-after M4 Anti-Flak Helmet, manufactured in the United Kingdom by Wilkinson Sword during World War II. Designed by General Malcolm Grow, Surgeon General of the 8th Army Air Force, the M4 was intended to provide additional head protection for aircrew in vulnerable positions.Constructed from overlapping Hadfield manganese steel plates, the helmet features a distinctive chromed leather exterior, designed to be worn over the RAF C-Type or AAF A-11 flying helmet. The ear cut-outs accommodate communication receivers, allowing for seamless integration with flight gear.Originally developed for crewmen in confined aircraft positions—such as ball turret gunners—the M4 quickly saw broader use throughout the AAF, and even among RAF crews flying U.S.-built aircraft like the B-17 Flying Fortress and Hudson. This example retains very good overall shape, though it shows expected service wear including surface scuffs, finish loss, and wear to the chromed leather. The interior chamois lining is present and in very good condition. The leather chinstrap is intact and complete, featuring a “Lift-the-Dot” fastener and black painted single-prong buckle, both in good condition however, a period repair to the strap is evident using what appears to be glue. This can be repaired properly as the leather strap is in fine condition. An increasingly difficult-to-find item, this helmet represents a solid example of one of the rarest WWII flight helmets issued by the U.S. Army Air Forces and the Royal Air Force. A standout piece for any serious WWII aviation or flight gear collection.
