The Berkshire Museum was the first major institution to acquire one of his paintings, selecting Megalopolis, a prize-winning and large-scale depiction of a railroad scene. It was during this time in the Berkshires that Groat’s work caught the attention of Norman Rockwell, who was so impressed by the then 29-year-old artist that he personally invited him to dinner—a formative moment early in Groat’s career.Groat was later honored by the United Nations, which selected a series of his paintings for reproduction on a commemorative set of postage stamps. These ten works are now part of the permanent collection of the United Nations Philatelic Museum in Geneva, Switzerland. His paintings have found homes in the collections of prominent figures including President Jimmy Carter, Henry Kissinger, the late Jacob Javits, Sir Michael Tippett, and Arthur Fiedler, among many others. Collectors from around the world, including diplomats and ambassadors, have sought out Groat’s paintings for their refined technique and timeless aesthetic. This offering represents a unique opportunity to acquire a work by one of America’s notable modern Impressionists, whose contributions to the world of art continue to inspire admiration and critical acclaim.
