Devers – Commanding U.S. Forces in the European TheaterJacob Loucks Devers (1887–1979) was one of the most senior American generals of World War II, playing a pivotal yet often overlooked role in the Allied victory in Europe. A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (Class of 1909), Devers was a skilled artillery officer who rose steadily through the ranks between the world wars, ultimately earning command of major combat operations during WWII.During the Second World War, Devers served as Commanding General of U.S. Army Forces in the European Theater before being reassigned to command the Sixth Army Group in southern France. Under his leadership, American and French forces launched Operation Dragoon, the invasion of southern France in August 1944, which contributed significantly to the Allied push into Nazi-occupied Europe. His Sixth Army Group was the first Allied force to reach the Rhine River and played a key role in clearing German forces from Alsace and the Black Forest.Devers also served as the Chief of the Armored Force, where he was instrumental in developing America’s tank doctrine and armored divisions—decisions that would prove crucial throughout the war. He later commanded Army Ground Forces, overseeing training and organization across the U.S. Army.By war’s end, Devers held te rank of four-star general, and after the war, he served as Commanding General of Army Ground Forces until his retirement in 1949. Though often overshadowed by more public figures, Devers was a strategic and logistical mastermind, respected by both peers and subordinates for his decisiveness and leadership.Devers passed away in 1979 and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. His legacy endures as a central figure in America’s European campaign during WWII.
