Lot 232:
Description
Dark purple velvet overgown with false front to mimic a vest. Hand sewn button holes, shell buttons, directional trim sewn in continuous line – not mirrored- , and unusual neck detailing in cream silk. Horsehair lining, cartridge pleating, and metal boning create a corset type silhouette. Some of the polished cotton lining is intact. Appears to have been created for theatrical use in the 1890s to mimic French royalty of the revolution period.
