Description
A finely worked carriage lap robe featuring a central green wool field framed by pieced velvet and floral brocade panels, enhanced with decorative hand embroidery in multiple colors. Embroidered feather, cross, and herringbone stitches accent the borders, with velvet appliqu? squares stitched at the corners. The piece is finished with a bold knotted fringe in green, orange, and red wool, and backed in cotton. A handsome example of Victorian needlework combining warmth with ornamental flourish, once intended for use in horse-drawn carriages and sleighs. good overall; some light wear and fading to velvets, scattered stitch losses, age toning and soiling to the backing, fringe with minor breaks, all consistent with age and use. est. 30in x 30in.
