December 7th Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 118:
Description
This World War II era Imperial Japanese Army Officers Shin Gunto sword is a complete and matching example of the standard military sidearm carried by officers throughout the Pacific and Asian theaters. The factory made blade is curved and stamped with serial number 34875 near the habaki collar, identifying it as an officially issued mass production piece created for the rapidly expanding wartime officer corps.
The hilt features a brass tsuba handguard, metal tsuka grip styled to resemble traditional cord wrapping, and matching metal fuchi and kashira fittings. The metal scabbard is covered in its original tan leather field wrap, showing heavy wear, tearing, and patina from field use. The scabbard throat is stamped with the same serial number 34875, confirming an original matched set, a key factor for collectors. Additional inspection marks on the tang further support its official military issue.
This is a solid and representative example of a wartime Japanese officers sword, offering both historical value and desirable matching components.
