Description

This is an extremely rare and historically significant artifact of World War I trench warfare: an Imperial German Body Armor breastplate, known colloquially as the Grabenpanzer or Trench Armor. This heavy, multi-plated steel breastplate was designed to provide protection against rifle and machine gun fire for stationary personnel such as snipers, machine gunners, and sentries, as illustrated by a period photograph of a German soldier wearing a similar vest. This example is particularly exceptional because it retains its original, striking Cubist-style geometric camouflage paint scheme , featuring large, irregular patches of yellow, olive green, brown, gray, and off-white separated by thick black lines. This distinctive pattern was an early attempt at disruptive camouflage intended to break up the wearer s outline against the complex background of the trenches. The armor consists of a thick, riveted steel plate designed to cover the chest and upper abdomen, with separate shoulder pieces for added protection. The reverse shows heavy rust and the remnants of the attachment loops for securing the vest, confirming its period authenticity and combat use in the trenches.
