December 7th Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 180:
Description
This lot features a rare and highly sought-after example of an Imperial Japanese Naval Landing Force IJNLF Type 90 or Type 3 Combat Helmet, distinguished by its unique insignia and service branch. The Imperial Japanese Navy used a steel helmet that was often similar in shape to the Army s Type 90, but specialized for Naval service.
The helmet retains its original field drab/brown-green paint finish, showing significant wear, scratching, and patina consistent with combat use in the harsh conditions of the Pacific Theater. Attached to the front crown is the distinctive IJNLF insignia, a non-ferrous metal badge featuring a foul anchor surmounted by a stylized cherry blossom and a chain detail, confirming its issue to the Naval Special Landing Forces. This insignia is pinned or riveted through the shell and is a key identifier for this scarce branch.
The helmet is equipped with the correct original leather liner system, consisting of leather pads laced together and suspended inside the shell. The leather shows heavy discoloration, drying, and aging. The interior also features the original tan canvas or cotton chinstrap affixed to the liner band, which is also heavily aged and worn. Faint Japanese Kanji markings are visible on the inside dome of the helmet, which may denote the soldierÕs name or unit.
Helmets from the IJNLF are significantly scarcer than standard IJA Army issue, making this a premium acquisition for the collector of Pacific Theater militaria. The complete state of the insignia, liner, and chinstrap enhances its display value and historical integrity.
