December 7th Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 182:
Description
A very rare and authentic piece of armored history, this is an original World War II Imperial Japanese Army IJA tanker or mechanic s protective helmet. This headgear was standard issue for tank crews, armored vehicle personnel, and likely mechanics, offering essential padding and impact protection within the cramped confines of Japanese armor. The helmet is constructed of dark brown, heavy-duty canvas or cotton twill, built up in padded segments to absorb shock. A key feature is the hand-stitched, leather five-pointed star insignia attached to the front, which signifies its military origin.
The helmet design is complex and practical, featuring padded segments over the crown, laced openings over the ears which may have allowed for communications or hearing protection , and leather flaps with metal D-rings and ties over the chinstrap area. The leather components show use and stiffness consistent with age, and the canvas exhibits a wonderful, field-worn patina. Due to their low survival rate and the small number of Japanese armored units, these helmets are significantly rarer than infantry gear, making this a highly desirable and unique artifact for any serious collector of Pacific Theater or armored vehicle militaria.
