December 7th Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 227:
Description
WW1 French Roold helmet, painted red, white and blue, the colors of France with a nickname painted across the front. This lot presents an exceptionally rare and museum-quality artifact of early military aviation: an Original World War I French Aviators Protective Flight Helmet, identified as a pattern similar to those supplied by the famous Roold company. This helmet is highly desirable due to its distinct construction and striking personalization.
The helmet is constructed in two primary sections. The outer dome is made of heavy, segmented leather which has been painted a prominent red or deep rust color, characteristic of some early flight or racing gear used for high visibility. This leather dome is a protective shell designed to absorb impact. Hand-painted in bold, stylized white script around the circumference of the red band is a partially visible name, likely Rhony or a similar period nickname, providing unique provenance and flair consistent with the personalized gear favored by WWI pilots. Beneath the hard dome is a darker, blue-gray leather soft helmet that fits over the head, featuring long ear flaps that extend to cover the jaw. The ear flaps are fitted with circular, perforated leather ventilation/earphone covers.
The interior of the hard dome features a quilted dark brown velvet or leather lining for cushioning. The inner soft helmet portion shows a contrasting lining, confirming the complex, layered construction of this protective headgear. The overall condition, while showing extensive age, paint wear, and patina, is excellent for a WWI leather artifact, preserving the unique personalization and construction details. This helmet is a truly unique, identifiable relic from the earliest days of aerial combat.
