Description

This lot features an exceptional and historically moving artifact of World War II: an original Royal Air Force RAF Pilot Uniform Tunic worn by a Polish Volunteer serving in the RAF during the conflict. Polish pilots formed several highly effective squadrons within the RAF, playing a critical role in the Battle of Britain and subsequent operations.

The tunic is constructed from the characteristic blue-gray RAF wool serge fabric and retains its original period cut, featuring four pleated pockets and a matching fabric belt with a gold-toned metal buckle. The uniform is heavily adorned with insignia confirming the wearerÕs elite status and national origin. On the chest, this tunic includes the pilot s original full-sized Polish Pilot Wings, a significant detail. Additionally, the left breast pocket features a sewn hole indicating the prior placement of what was likely a Polish squadron badge. The shoulder is fitted with the embroidered POLAND shoulder title rocker, confirming his status as a Polish volunteer serving in exile. The left lapel is adorned with a unique metal Polish unit badge, a silver-toned charging animal or crest, highly sought after by Polish forces collectors. On the right side, the tunic is fitted with the half-sized volunteer RAF wings commonly worn by foreign airmen. The buttons securing the pockets and front of the tunic are original Polish Air Force brass buttons featuring the Polish Eagle emblem, rather than the standard RAF crown. The cuffs display the embroidered officer rank for Squadron Leader.

Above the left breast pocket, a ribbon bar displays multiple service ribbons, which include Polish awards.
