December 7th Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 301:
Description
Original World War II US Army Air Forces A-2 Leather Flight Jacket, an iconic garment worn by all USAAF pilots and aircrew throughout the conflict.
The jacket is constructed of horsehide or goatskin leather in a desirable medium-brown color, which displays a fantastic, rugged patina with extensive creasing and scuffing, indicating genuine field use. The jacket follows the classic A-2 specifications: a point collar, snap-flapped patch pockets, shoulder epaulets, and knitted wool cuffs and waistband. The jacket retains its original heavy-duty Talon zipper, which is functional and correctly marked. The knitted cuffs and waistband are present in a matching brown color and show the expected wear and pilling for their age.
Crucially, the jacket retains its original US Government specification tag securely sewn into the collar lining. The tag is clearly legible, identifying the garment as TYPE A-2, DRAWING NO. 30-1415, manufactured under contract A.C. NO. W535 AC 29191 by the highly respected firm BRONCO MFG. CORP., NEW YORK, N.Y. The interior lining is constructed of a sturdy brown/khaki fabric, consistent with mid-war manufacturing. The overall presentation is that of an authentic, service-worn A-2 flight jacket.
