December 7th Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 312:
Description
Original WWII U.S. Army Air Forces A-2 flight jacket featuring period-applied insignia to a member of the Air Transport Command ATC serving in the China-Burma-India theater. The front bears a large hand-painted leather ATC insignia depicting the commandÕs distinctive red-and-blue arrow over a gold globe, with the Army Air Forces winged-star patch sewn to the left shoulder and the CBI China-Burma-India leather patch to the right.
The jacket retains its Talon zipper, original brown knit cuffs and waistband, and shows uniform, combat-worn patina throughout. The ATC was responsible for flying critical supply and personnel routes Òover the HumpÓ from India into China, supporting both U.S. and Chinese forces. Jackets bearing CBI insignia and ATC markings are rare survivors from this vital but hazardous logistical campaign.
Condition: Very good overall; honest field wear with supple leather, strong color to insignia, and minor age cracks to finish. Zipper functional, knits with light wear.
