December 7th Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 80:
Description
This is an authentic mid-19th century Carte de Visite CDV photograph depicting a young Union soldier from the American Civil War era, identifiable by his uniform and accoutrements. The soldier is shown in a full-length studio pose, wearing a standard Union military frock coat with brass buttons, light-colored trousers, and a forage cap, and he appears to be wearing a dark leather belt with a buckle and a cap pouch. He strikes a formal, slightly dramatic pose, holding a cavalry saber or officer s sword pointed toward the ground, resting his left hand on the sword grip. The studio setting features common Victorian photographic backdrops, including a large column and pedestal. The reverse of the card confirms the photographer as W. H. Fuller, Photographer, Brockport, N.Y., which establishes the photograph s geographical origin near Rochester, New York, a region that supplied numerous regiments to the Union Army. The CDV format and the subject s uniform firmly date this photograph to the 1860s, making it a desirable piece of Civil War history and military photography.
