December 7th Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 83:
Description
This is a high-quality, mid-to-late 19th-century Carte de Visite CDV photograph depicting a distinguished German military officer. The subject is shown in a full-length studio pose, confidently leaning against a pedestal, set against a backdrop that suggests a balcony or terrace with a detailed wrought-iron fence and balustrade. The officer wears a dark, high-collared military tunic featuring multiple buttons and prominent epaulets adorned with fringe, indicative of a high-ranking officer in the Prussian or a similar German state army before the unification of Germany. The photograph was taken by the prestigious studio of L. Haase & Comp., as confirmed by the imprint on the front and back . The German text on the reverse identifies the firm as Knigl. Hof-Photographen Royal Court Photographers to the Crown Princess of Prussia, and lists studio locations in both Berlin and Breslau, establishing a firm date within the 1860s to 1880s and confirming the imperial European provenance of the portrait. The excellent detail in the uniform and the photographer s status make this a superior example of 19th-century European military portraiture.
