Description
This is a well-preserved late 19th-century Cabinet Card photograph depicting a distinguished American military officer in a bust-length, profile pose. The subject is clearly wearing a U.S. Army uniform with a high, standing collar and features a single star on each shoulder strap, identifying him as a Brigadier General. His mature, clean-shaven look and prominent mustache are typical of officers in the post-Civil War to Spanish-American War era. The photograph was taken by the prominent studio of Miley in Lexington, Virginia, as confirmed by the imprint beneath the image. This geographic location is highly significant as Lexington is home to the Virginia Military Institute VMI and was the final home of many Confederate figures, including Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. The quality of the photograph, the subject s high rank, and the strong Southern provenance from a major military education center make this a desirable piece of late 19th-century military photography.
