December 7th Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 96:
Description
This is an extremely rare, original, and unused discharge certificate from the American Volunteer Group AVG, famously known as the Flying Tigers, which served under the Chinese Air Force from 1941 to 1942. The document is an authentic piece of military history, confirming membership in the AVG during its operational period. The certificate features bold Gothic script identifying the American Volunteer Group Chinese Air Force, with spaces to record the member s name, dates of service, and the signature of the Group Commander. Crucially, the document is adorned with two iconic images: a central illustration of a Curtiss P-40 Warhawk in flight, the primary fighter aircraft used by the AVG, and the Flying Tigers insigniaÑa winged, snarling tiger leaping over a V-for-Victory symbolÑrendered as an official-looking wax seal with red and blue ribbons. The AVG was composed of U.S. military pilots and personnel who secretly volunteered to defend China against Japan prior to the United States officially entering World War II. Its short operational span, legendary combat record, and limited personnel make any original document directly related to the AVG exceptionally scarce and highly desirable to collectors.
