Description
A World War II-era U.S. Navy illuminated aircraft gun sight, model AN Mark 8 Mod. 3, manufactured by the Bell and Howell Company of Chicago. The instrument is constructed with a heavy metal body featuring a black textured crinkle finish. The optical system consists of a primary horizontal objective lens and an angled glass reflector plate at the top. Two integrated spirit levels with yellow liquid vials are visible near the reflector. A curved, leather-wrapped brow rest is attached to the side of the housing to assist with eye alignment. The cylindrical base of the instrument features the following stamped and engraved markings: AIR INLET, U.S. NAVY, BU. OF ORD., ILLUMINATED SIGHT, AN MARK 8 MOD. 3, INSPECTOR H. T. M., B NO. 4702, and BELL and HOWELL CO. CHICAGO.
