Spring Military Aviation and Militaria Auction
Lot 149A:
Description
This is a WWII US Army Assault Vest, frequently identified as the D-Day or Ranger vest, attributed to the manufacturer Harian. The garment is constructed from heavy-duty Olive Drab OD number 3 cotton canvas in a light tan or khaki shade. Designed for amphibious operations, the sleeveless vest features an open front secured by two adjustable web straps with metal friction buckles. The load-carrying layout includes four large expandable pockets on the front, two on each side, intended for ammunition and rations. The reverse features a large integrated upper knapsack and a wide lower transverse pocket. The vest is equipped with numerous brass grommets for drainage and the attachment of M1910 wire-hanger equipment. Webbing straps are located on the back for the attachment of an entrenching tool or blanket roll. A black stencil reading U.S. is located on the wearer’s left front. Embossed characters are visible on the brass grommets but are not legible. This pattern was famously utilized by the 2nd and 5th Ranger Battalions and the 29th Infantry Division during the invasion of Normandy. These vests were made specifically for the invasion of Normandy and rushed into production in the spring of 1944. Approx half of these were manufactured in Massachusetts by both the J. Shoe and Harrian Companies, both of Haverhill, Massachusetts. In addition to the production pieces, there were samples made, as well as units used as master models in assembly areas or final inspection areas. This version appears to be made by Harrian and is one of these that was used but never delivered to the Army. It has the correct -2- markings on the large grommets. In addition, there is a non-standard "US" stenciled at the waistband. Lastly it lacks the US property mark on the flap as it was not delivered to the Army, and lacks the maker stamp beneath.
