Lot 250:
Description
Rare German WWI M16 Single Decal Kriegsmarine Combat Helmet with WWII DecalThis lot features a rare and historically complex artifact: a German WWI Model 1916 M16 Combat Helmet that was reissued and used by the Kriegsmarine German Navy during the WWII era, evidenced by the addition of the naval insignia decal. The M16 is the standard WWI German helmet, recognizable by its flared skirt and the large, projecting ventilation/chinstrap lugs on the sides. The helmet shell retains a post-WWI field green paint finish, which is heavily distressed with extensive surface rust and pitting across the dome and skirt, giving it a strong veteran aesthetic. The original WWI shell lugs are present and intact.A key feature confirming the helmets later WWII service is the presence of a Single Decal SD Kriegsmarine Anchor Shield. The decal displays crossed gold anchors over a white shield, bordered in gold/yellow, confirming its use by the German Navy. The decal is generally intact, showing minor chipping and wear consistent with the rough texture of the helmet shell beneath it.The interior is complete with a post-WWI or early WWII-era liner system. The shell retains the original three-pad leather liner system typical of the M16, secured by a period steel band. The leather pads are dry, heavily discolored, and show a white/gray patina from age and perspiration, but remain secured by an original drawstring. The helmet also retains a short, brown leather chinstrap which appears to be a field-modified or replacement piece, attached by a distinctive metal clip to one of the original WWI chinstrap bails that utilized the ventilation lugs. This M16 helmet reissued to the Kriegsmarine is an extraordinary piece, spanning both World Wars and featuring a scarce naval decal on an antique shell, making it a compelling crossover collectible.
