Lot 252:
Description
This is an extraordinary example of a very rare original German World War Two Double Decal SS RZM Transitional Helmet. The term Transitional refers to the use of an older style M16 or M18 helmet shell which was refurbished for service under the Third Reich, featuring the new M31 liner system and period decals. This model is exceptionally desirable as it bridges the gap between WWI-era headgear and the classic M35 helmets. The helmet is distinctive for its dual decals. The left side features the powerful and iconic SS runes shield, the hallmark of the Schutzstaffel. The right side displays the Party shield, featuring the national colors surrounding a central swastika. This decal configuration is correct for early SS helmets before the standardization of the M35. The decals show significant age, wear, and patina consistent with the shell’s original factory paint and field use. The condition of these decals is paramount to value.Close inspection of the helmet?s interior reveals a legible factory mark. The images suggest a stamping, possibly F.W.T. or F.Z. inside a circle, often associated with a size or maker mark found on early shells. The M31 liner is present, showing heavy deterioration, dryness, and cracking of the leather, indicative of genuine age and decades of storage. The original chinstrap is also present though heavily worn. The overall appearance is that of an untouched, veteran-acquired piece with a deeply aged patina. The RZM reference in the title refers to the Reichszeugmeisterei or National Quartermaster’s Office, which regulated and oversaw the production of SS uniforms and equipment in the early period, before the SS developed its own supply system. While an actual RZM stamp on a helmet is rare, the designation is often used by collectors to refer to these very early production SS helmets. This artifact is one of the most sought-after categories in German militaria, appealing to the advanced collector specializing in early SS history and headgear. Its double-decal configuration on a transitional shell makes it a museum-quality piece.
