Spring Military Aviation and Militaria Auction
Lot 261:
Description
This lot features a highly sought-after artifact from the early years of World War II: a German Model 1935 M35 Double Decal Combat Helmet Shell, notable for its original decals, large size, and soldier identification. The M35 model is recognized by its rolled shell edge and separate ventilation grommets. The helmet shell was manufactured by Eisenh?ttenwerk Thale ET in a very desirable large size 66, clearly stamped ET66 on the interior skirt. The lot number, stamped in the rear interior, is 4517. The exterior retains its original smooth, early-war field green paint, which exhibits authentic, heavy surface wear, scratching, and widespread areas of age-related surface oxidation or light rust, confirming its genuine veteran status.Crucially, both original, period-applied decals are present on the shell, though they exhibit significant field wear:On the wearer’s right side is the National Colors Shield decal Black, White, and Red. Due to heavy chipping and oxidation over the top layer, this decal is estimated to be approximately 50% intact, presenting a rugged, battlefield-worn look. On the wearer’s left side is the Wehrmacht Heer Eagle Decal. This decal is remarkably well-preserved beneath some light cracking, estimated to be approximately 85-90% intact, displaying the clear Wehrmacht eagle clutching the wreathed swastika.A significant feature is the presence of handwritten identification inside the dome of the shell. Painted in white script, the name Kurt Bock and the number 7569 are clearly visible. This personalization greatly enhances the provenance and historical appeal of the relic. The shell is missing its liner band, liner, and chinstrap, but all original rivet holes are present. This M35 Double Decal Heer shell is a fantastic relic for the collector, offering a desirable early model, a sought-after large size ET66, and the compelling history added by the original dual decals and the soldier?s name.
