Description

This uniform grouping belonged to Rita C. Fay, who served in the United States Navy Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) during World War II. The collection consists of two navy blue twill service dress jackets and a framed portrait photograph. The jackets feature a four-button front closure with plastic buttons embossed with the United States Navy eagle and fouled anchor. The rounded lapels are fitted with insignia depicting a fouled anchor and propeller. Each jacket bears a Petty Officer Third Class (PO3) rating badge on the left sleeve, featuring a white eagle over a red chevron. The specialty mark is for an Aerographer’s Mate, depicted as a fouled anchor and vertical propeller. Internal construction includes woven labels that read Made and Sold Under Authority of U.S. Navy and U.S. Women’s Naval Reserve. One jacket contains a name tape sewn over the internal label identifying the owner as Rita C. Fay. The accompanying small-format portrait photograph shows the servicewoman in her WAVES service dress jacket and garrison-style hat with a U.S. Navy ribbon tally. The photograph is housed in a period decorative floral needlepoint frame with a gold-tone inner border.
