Description

Incredibly rare M-421A Summer Flight jacket with the famed VMF-214 Blacksheep Squadron patch and leather name tag to Lt. Glenn Bowers. Lieutenant Glenn Bowers served as a U.S. Marine Corps fighter pilot with the legendary VMF-214 ?Black Sheep Squadron, ? the famed unit led by Major Gregory ?Pappy? Boyington during World War II. Formed in 1943 and composed largely of seasoned and unconventional pilots, VMF-214 quickly earned a reputation as one of the most aggressive and successful Marine fighter squadrons in the Pacific Theater. Flying the formidable Vought F4U Corsair, Lt. Bowers operated under Boyington?s bold and hard-charging leadership during combat operations over the Solomon Islands, where the squadron conducted fighter sweeps, bomber escort missions, and strafing attacks against Japanese positions. Boyington, a larger-than-life commander and Medal of Honor recipient, fostered a fiercely independent and highly effective fighting unit, and pilots like Bowers were integral to its success. During its brief but intense combat tour, VMF-214 achieved an extraordinary record against enemy aircraft while operating from primitive forward airstrips under constant threat. Lt. Bowers? service with the Black Sheep Squadron places him among an elite group of Marine aviators whose skill, resilience, and combat effectiveness became the stuff of legend in World War II aviation history. The Original VMF-214 Patch has been damaged significantly by moths. Few, if any original VMF-214 Flight jackets remain with named association. This is a rare opportunity to obtain this incredible piece of military aviation history.
