Description

A World War II era China-Burma-India (CBI) Theater souvenir scarf, circa 1941-1945. The scarf is constructed from a lightweight, fine-weave white fabric with a slight sheen, consistent with silk or rayon. It features machine-hemmed edges and is finished at both ends with long, multi-colored synthetic fringe in alternating sections of red, white, and blue. One end of the scarf features embroidered blue block lettering reading CHINA BURMA INDIA above a central motif of crossed flagpoles. These poles bear the flags of the Republic of China and the United States. Positioned between the poles is a shield emblem with a blue upper section containing a white sun and star, and a lower section of red and white vertical stripes. The opposite end of the scarf features a circular embroidered insignia for the 14th Air Force, known as the Flying Tigers. This design depicts a winged orange and black striped tiger leaping through a white star with a red center, set against a dark blue circular ground. These items were typically theater-made goods purchased by American servicemen stationed in the CBI Theater.
