Lot 96:
Description
This collection consists of six original black and white silver gelatin photographs documenting the service of Captain John J. Voll and the 31st Fighter Group of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) during World War II. The images primarily feature North American P-51 Mustang fighter aircraft operating in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. One photograph provides a detailed view of the nose art on Captain Voll’s aircraft, inscribed American Beauty and Captain Voll, accompanied by a grid of aerial victory symbols. A second photograph shows the aircraft Emma II with the squadron code MX and the individual aircraft letter J, identifying it as part of the 307th Fighter Squadron. A third image captures a P-51 in flight with the markings MX-G. A fourth photograph depicts a P-51 on the ground with the squadron code WZ-1, corresponding to the 309th Fighter Squadron, and a partial tail serial number 31182. The aircraft in the collection feature the distinctive diagonal striped tail markings used by the 31st Fighter Group for identification. One photograph depicts an officer in a USAAF uniform, including a crush cap and wool service shirt, standing beside a Mustang. The collection is accompanied by a contemporary handwritten note identifying the subjects as John Voll and the 31st Fighter Group.
