Description
This sterling silver match safe, also known as a vesta case, serves as an advertising piece for the Home Insurance Company of New York. The rectangular case features rounded corners and a hinged lid. The obverse is decorated in high-relief chasing with the text COMPLIMENTS OF HOME INSURANCE CO NEW YORK in various stylized fonts, surrounded by an ornate border of scrolling acanthus leaves and floral motifs. The reverse side depicts a detailed embossed scene of a horse-drawn steam fire engine pumper in motion, featuring two horses, a driver, and a boiler with billowing smoke. This scene is framed by a decorative border matching the obverse. The interior lip of the case is stamped with the word STERLING and an unidentified pictorial maker mark.
