Description

An antique mechanical bank manufactured by the J. – E. Stevens Co. of Cromwell, Connecticut, based on the design by John Hall and patented on December 21, 1869. The bank is constructed of painted cast iron and features a central wooden cashier figure. Modeled after a Victorian-era counting house, the front facade includes two arched lattice windows and a central double door. The sides and rear of the bank consist of open lattice-work panels. The exterior is finished in a polychrome color scheme featuring a cream-colored body with blue undulating borders, a red roof, and a red brick-patterned base. A green dome-shaped finial is situated atop the cupola. The mechanism is activated by pulling a small wire doorbell located to the right of the front entrance, which causes the cupola to open and the cashier figure to rise. The front facade is cast with the raised text HALL’S EXCELSIOR BANK across three lines. The interior of the cupola lid contains a printed paper label reading Cashier.
