Fall 2026 Militaria and Aviation Auction
Lot 116:
Description
Original World War I Imperial German Model 1917 rifle grenade, commonly known to collectors as the “Ink Pot” grenade due to its distinctive squat cylindrical profile.Introduced during 1917, this pattern was designed for use with a rifle-mounted cup-type launcher and was broadly comparable in concept to contemporary French rifle-grenade systems. The grenade features a heavy cylindrical metal body with a domed upper section and central axial opening, along with the characteristic internal and threaded components associated with the Model 1917 design. Contemporary and collector references identify this pattern as the Gewehrgranate 17 / Karabingranate 1917. This example shows substantial age and battlefield-type wear, including oxidation, pitting, surface roughness, finish loss, and general corrosion throughout. The body can be separated, revealing its internal threaded assembly and surviving internal components. The piece retains strong visual character despite its relic condition. An uncommon WWI Imperial German Model 1917 “Ink Pot” rifle grenade, displaying substantial age and honest period wear. Inert collectible only.
