WWII Japanese Type 91 Fragmentation Grenade – Inert
Description
Original WWII Imperial Japanese Type 91 fragmentation grenade, developed for use both as a conventional hand grenade and in conjunction with the Japanese Type 89 grenade discharger. The heavy cast-iron body features the distinctive deeply segmented exterior intended to aid fragmentation and handling.The grenade retains its brass percussion-type fuze assembly with safety wire/pin and remnants of the original pull cord. Traces of red paint remain around the upper body and fuze area, a feature associated with Japanese explosive ordnance markings. The body retains an overall dark finish with scattered surface wear and age.The underside shows the characteristic Type 91 base arrangement originally designed to accept the grenade’s removable propelling attachment, distinguishing it from the later Type 97 hand grenade, which generally utilized a solid base. The Type 91 employed a longer delay when configured for projection from the Type 89 discharger. Bullet PickerThis example has been rendered inert/empty, with no explosive contents present. The interior is visible through the opened body. Displays substantial original character, including finish wear, oxidation, surviving paint, and deterioration to the pull cord consistent with age.
