Description

World War I U.S. Army Model 1910 Haversack, manufactured by Canvas Products Co., St. Louis, Missouri, and clearly dated October 1918. The M1910 haversack was the standard field pack carried by the American Doughboy during the First World War and formed the core of the U.S. Army’s modular individual equipment system, designed to carry clothing, rations, mess equipment, and other field necessities while integrating with the cartridge belt and accompanying equipment. This example is constructed of khaki/olive drab cotton canvas and retains its characteristic large folding body, exterior meat-can pouch, adjustable shoulder straps, webbing, blackened metal hardware, and leather reinforcement tabs. The large "U.S." stencil remains prominently visible on the exterior flap. The pack opens fully to reveal the original internal strap arrangement and field configuration, with the maker’s marking plainly stamped on the interior: "CANVAS PRODUCTS CO / OCT / 1918." Canvas Products Company was an active wartime government contractor, and period U.S. procurement records specifically document the firm supplying haversacks and other canvas equipment to the Army during 1918. The October 1918 date places this example at the very end of America’s wartime production effort, only weeks before the Armistice of November 11, 1918. The pack remains notably complete, retaining its web shoulder straps, attachment hooks, adjustment hardware, leather reinforcement pieces, securing straps, and meat-can pouch. The canvas displays attractive field age, staining, fading, edge wear, and handling marks consistent with genuine service and storage. The leather tabs show expected drying and surface wear, while the blackened metal hardware retains strong period character. An excellent, highly displayable example of the WWI U.S. Army M1910 Haversack, especially desirable for its clearly legible Canvas Products Co. October 1918 maker/date stamp, intact hardware, and largely complete configuration. A classic piece of American Doughboy field equipment suitable for an advanced WWI U.S. militaria collection.
