Description

Framed World War I Era Studio Portrait of an Unidentified Enlisted Soldier in Service Uniform and Overseas Cap, circa 1917-1919 Offered is a period-framed photographic portrait of an unidentified enlisted man of the World War I era, shown in standard service uniform with garrison or overseas cap. No name, unit, or photographer’s mark has been established by the available research, and no separate biography exists for the subject; the story here rests entirely in the visual record preserved by the image itself. Such studio portraits were a near-universal ritual of the American mobilization for the First World War. As millions of young men entered federal service between 1917 and 1918, families and sweethearts on the home front commissioned or requested formal photographs before departure for training camps and, in many cases, before embarkation for France. These sittings, often taken by local commercial photographers near training cantonments or by camp studios themselves, produced a vast body of sepia-toned and silver gelatin keepsakes meant to be framed and kept close by families awaiting news from stateside camps or the front. The uniform and cap style are consistent with standard American service dress of the period, though no unit insignia, rank chevrons, or campaign markings are clearly discernible to allow further identification. The photograph appears to be a sepia or silver gelatin print, presented under glass in its period frame. The image displays typical age toning and minor silvering or fading consistent with early twentieth-century photographic emulsions and long display; the print itself has not been examined outside the frame. The frame shows surface wear, edge rubs, and minor abrasions commensurate with a century of age and handling, with honest toning to the image and no evidence of restoration. As an unidentified example, it falls within the standard range for this ubiquitous category of WWI-era home-front ephemera. A modest but evocative relic of the American WWI mobilization, preserving the anonymous face of a doughboy-era soldier just as his family once framed and cherished him.
